Author — Date: As with many of the Minor Prophets, nothing is known about the prophet except that which can be inferred from the book. In the case of Habakkuk, internal information is virtually nonexistent, making conclusions about his identity and life conjectural. It is certain that he was a contemporary of Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and Zephaniah. Because the prophet is known to us only by name once again indicates the relative unimportance of the prophet, the major importance of the prophecy, and, more importantly, the God who sends the prophecy.

Further, he embraced God by faith chapter 3and embraces his people giving them the message that after the judgment to come, Chaldea Babyloniawill itself be judged. Because of the description in ; and the inscription insome have inferred that Habakkuk was a Levite who assisted in the music of the temple. The theme of the prophecy is judgment on Judah and Chaldea Babylon. The mention of the Chaldeanssuggests a late seventh century B. The fall of Nineveh occurred about B.

It may have been after this fulfillment that Habakkuk received his vision setting forth the overthrow of the Babylonian kingdom. If so, when Habakkuk prophesied, the southern kingdom was wallowing in its sin and tottering politically in view of the impending threat from Babylon, the current world power. The final destruction of the city was yet to occur in B. Advocates of the former view would select B.

The date of Habakkuk is difficult to ascertain, since he does not mention the king or kings during whose reigns he prophesied.

The best key that Habakkuk offers for dating his prophecy is his description of the Chaldeans in Some commentators, noting that God says He is in the process of raising up the Chaldeanswould date the prophecy as early as the reign of Manasseh.

Some due to length, have been shortened into "continued" sections.Chapter 1 ended with the prophet perplexed that God could use the wicked nation of Babylon to judge an ungodly Judah. Habakkuk had reminded God of Babylon's actions in destroying other nations and questioned how God could use such a wicked people.

The 2nd chapter of Habakkuk gives God's answer to these questions. In doing so it lists 5 'woes' against any nation or society that descends to the level that will eventually bring the judgment of God.

Yet it also tells us the most important key to living in this age and gives a glimpse into the age to come. There is plenty to look at so let's do just that! Habakkuk I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint.

Then the LORD replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false.

Habakkuk 2:1-4 - Waiting and Watching

Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay. The actions of Habakkuk in these verses show what a godly man he was. He took time out to separate himself from others and quiet his own soul so that could await and hear God's response.

It is essential that when you don't understand something and it is causing you concern that you did as Habakkuk did. When we look at these verses we find that Habakkuk did the following: 1. Inquired of God concerning his problem 2. Was expectant to hear an answer 3. Now in this busy world of ours those three simple points are often far easier to write, read and think about than do!

But the need to 'wait' upon God is still critical for spiritual enlightenment and growth. This revelation that God gave Habakkuk has a partial fulfillment for the days of Habakkuk and the coming defeat and exile into Babylon.

But it goes MUCH further that that! When you read the revelation which is summed up in the song of Habakkuk in chapter 3 we see that it takes us right to the very end of this age and the return of Jesus Christ! And look at how the New Testament makes use of this verse in Hab Heb You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. For in just a very little while, " He who is coming will come and will not delay.

In quoting this verse from Habakkuk, the writer of Hebrews shows us that the Habakkuk's 'revelation' is not a thing Thus the 'it' of Hab becomes a 'He' in Heb for the true revelation to Habakkuk is the coming of the Messiah - the person of the Lord Jesus. We await Him. Habakkuk See, he is puffed up ; his desires are not upright-- but the righteous will live by his faith -- indeed, wine betrays him; he is arrogant and never at rest. Because he is as greedy as the grave and like death is never satisfiedhe gathers to himself all the nations and takes captive all the peoples.

In verses 4 and 5 the true need of God's people is seen while they wait for the coming of the Messiah. In these verses the Lord contrasts the attitude of the coming Babylonians with the one great need for His people. The Babylonians and those in the world in varying degreesare said to be 'puffed up' and arrogant.

Their greed and discontentment leads to an unceasing unrest and dissatisfaction. They always must have 'more'. In contrast with this, the righteous live by faith.

Click image to enlarge. Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah have a great deal in common. Each one gives a different facet of the dealings of God with mankind. They show how the government of God is integrated into the government of men.

Another similarity is the fact that they come from approximately the same time period. In fact, they all could have been contemporaries, and the possibility is that they were. It is difficult to nail down the specific dates of the prophets—and of many of the other Old Testament books.

The reason, of course, is that the exact dates are not important. At least we know that all three prophets fit into the period between the reigns of kings Josiah and Jehoiakim, which would also be the time of the prophet Jeremiah. The northern kingdom had already gone into captivity, and the southern kingdom was right on the verge of captivity. After Josiah, every king in the southern kingdom was a bad king. Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah all fit into that period of decline. Although there are similarities, these books also differ from each other.

Nahum dealt only with Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire. Nahum showed that God is just, righteous, and a God of love; yet He was absolutely right in judging that city.

Habakkuk approaches the problem from a little different viewpoint. He is a man with questions. God answered the question for Habakkuk by informing him that He was preparing a nation, Babylon, to punish Judah and to take her into captivity—unless she changed her ways. Well, if you think Habakkuk had a problem before, you can see that he really had a problem then!

This book is very important in its relationship to the New Testament. It is generally conceded that the three great doctrinal books of the New Testament are Romans, Galatians, and Hebrews, all of which quote from Habakkuk.This chapter records God's answer to the second of Habakkuk's two questions raised in Habakkuk 1. The first regarded "how long" the well-deserved punishment of the wicked would be delayed.

Habakkuk Chapter 2 Bible Study: Five Woes Against Society

God's answer to the effect that Babylon, the great and wicked world-power soon to arise, would indeed punish wicked Israel for their sins did not fully satisfy Habakkuk.

How could the holy and righteous God use a wicked state like Babylon to punish Judea, which with all of their sins were yet better than the Babylonians? Habakkuk took up his watch to await God's answer; and Jehovah promptly answered Habakkuk Apparently, there was a terrible disappointment to Habakkuk in the revelation that the great new world power Babylon would be no better, in any sense, than was Assyria; and God's answer consisted of five terrible woes pronounced against the great wicked state that would destroy Judea: Woe 1 HabakkukWoe 2 HabakkukWoe 3 HabakkukWoe 4 Habakkukand Woe 5 Habakkuk These woes had the effect of describing, not merely Babylon, but all of the successive heads of the great Scarlet Beast of Revelation Things on earth where rebellious humanity had broken their fellowship with God would never get any better as long as men rejected their Creator, but God was not at all being defeated in any of this; the chapter concludes with the focus upon God Himself: "But Jehovah is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him" Habakkuk Both terms are to be considered figuratively.

Habakkuk was instructed to "write" the vision in order to assure its availability for all future generations, because the message was intended to bless all succeeding generations of mankind. The tablets mentioned here were the usual plates upon which writing was done. In the meanwhile, neither Habakkuk, nor anyone else, should be upset or perplexed because one wicked and ruthless state follows another with monotonous certainty, God using each in turn to punish the sins of the predecessor.

This does not mean that God approved any wicked state. All are under the judgment of God; and, in his own time, God will settle his account with sin in this world. That there are indeed overtones of the Eternal Judgment itself in this verse is perfectly apparent when it is compared with Hebrews.

For yet a very little while, He that cometh shall come, and shall not tarry, But my righteous one shall live by faith: And, if he shrink back, my soul hath no pleasure in him. Thus, the very terminology of this passage was applied by the writer of Hebrews to the Second Coming of Christ. Both in Habakkuk and in Hebrews, "The reference is to the certainty of the event.

Designated by many commentators as, "one of the profoundest utterance of the O. There is no reference whatever here to the inward, subjective faith of believers.

As Moffatt translated the passage, "The good man lives as he is faithful. This passage in Habakkuk makes it certain that Paul referred to the same thing. Although the character of the one described in this verse was primarily a reference to the Babylonian state, in its wider application, it describes the greedy, godless states of all times. Here we have a metaphor of the approaching enemy destined to overthrow God's rebellious Judea. It is that of a proud, treacherous, haughty drunkard, Babylon, drunk with power, motivated by an insatiable desire like that of the drunkard for drink. It was, in the case of Belshazzar, the immediate cause of the fall of Babylon DanielKipling used it thus:.

Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe. Beginning with this verse, there are five woes pronounced against Babylon, of three verses each, and taking the form of repeated maledictions voiced spontaneously by the oppressed peoples themselves who had fallen under the feet of the conqueror.

Oppression always provokes just such hatred and denunciation against the oppressor as that described in these verses. Against aggression. Kerr was doubtless correct in seeing the Pentateuch as a background of these words. The preacher must do what he can to make the word of God known, and make it known in as many ways as possible. Habakkuk had to make it known as permanently as possible - he was told to write the vision.

The preacher must do what he can to make a permanent impact on his listeners. Habakkuk had to make it plain.
